SS17 Couture Beauty Roundup

While many words can describe the beauty at Paris’ spring 2017 couture week, one word in particular may comprise the individual shows to evoke the general mood of the season: whimsy.

Beauty backstage at Dior

Dior’s transition from the modern, architectural style of the inimitable Raf Simmons to the romance of the equally inimitable Maria Grazia Chiuri has been truly stunning. Nodding to Dior classicism with an extreme a-line he dubbed the “new look” in 1947, Chiuri delivered structured femininity on a runway beset with faux grass and shrubs. Organza masks in the shape of forest fauna added mystery to head-to-toe black.

Dior

We adored the Pre-Raphaelite curls, ever so slightly messy, as if the models had been woken from a dream to walk the runway. Feather headdresses adorned the textured waves as nature-made crowns. And tiny gold stars, acquirable at any craft store, dotted cheekbones and eyes.

Pat McGrath and Eugene Suleiman were, not surprisingly, the geniuses behind the faces and hair of the Maison Martin Margiela runway. Cornrows were laced with primary and neon-hued thread while the models’ eyes, ears and mouths were outlined in the same; a perfect complement to the fine artist (Benjamine Shine) collaboration that produced a 3D rendering of a beautiful human face made entirely from tulle.

Elie Saab SS17 couture

Headpieces, ribbons and classic headbands were undoubtedly a preview of what’s to come in street style this year. We sighed over the geometric headbands at Elie Saab, the chiffon ribbons at Schiparelli and the unbelievable jeweled ear cuffs at Georges Hobeika.

Beauty at Jean Paul Gaultier SS17

Chanel

Look for trends in bold eye makeup via the yellow lids at Gaultier and orange shadow at Armani. Stock up on iridescent glitter, loose or in a gel formulation. Chanel’s show gave homage to 90s style with a subtle glint at the outside of models’ eyes. And don’t count out the matte black nail polish you’ve flirted with for the last few seasons. Alexis Mabille paired the manicure with jeweled crowns in a beautiful mix of naughty and nice.
