Get styled in the likes of crazy rich asians’ best fashion moments

Read on to find out how you can dress like one of them Crazy Rich Asians.

Costumes in movies are more than just mere clothing – they act as visual aids, dropping the viewers clues to the performers’ on-screen personas. The upcoming movie Crazy Rich Asians portrays Singapore’s wealthiest folk, and all the fashion and glamour come along with that pedigree.

Wardrobe therefore was a huge task, but costume designer Mary E. Vogt, along with Andrea Wong (former editor-in-chief of Elle in Malaysia) pulled together a breathtaking array of brands. From Elie Saab to Chloe, Dior, Ralph Lauren and even The Gap, clothes were used to speak of each character’s mood and psyche.

We’ve rounded up and dissected 5 of our favourite looks from the trailer that you would be spotting when the movie hits the screens on August 22. We’ve also given you options on how to get the look, if you’re keen on playing dress-up when you hit the theatre.

Rachel’s red backless skater dress.

Rachel (Constance Wu) arrives at her eccentric,  nouveau riche friend Peik Lin’s home. Dressed in a red dress, she is set to spend the day with Peik Lin (played by rapper Awkwafina), before heading to a party at her boyfriend’s mansion. Clad in red, the colour that represents love and desire, she stands out in these scenes, a bright spark among an opulent home. The dress was picked out by her mother, who told her what an auspicious colour red is — perfect to meet the boyfriend’s family in. We fell for the backless cut-out detail, and gorgeous shade of the dress.

Topshop’s mini dress.

Araminta’s liquid gold jumpsuit.

Model Araminta Lee (played by Japanese-British actress Sonoya Mizuno) makes a mark in this gold sequin jumpsuit. A colour that symbolizes wealth and power, this is quite the outfit. Araminta is a little bit loud and brash, and it suits her character perfectly as she shepherds friends to her bachelorette party — on a private island, might we add.

Dorothy Perkins’ animal print jumpsuit.

Eleanor’s plum floor-length gown.

Eleanor Young (Michelle Yeoh) is the mother of Nick Young. She’s all understated elegance in this floor-length plum gown. It conveys the fact that she’s a traditional woman, but one who embodies total sophistication.

Rachel’s pastel pink summer dress.

When meeting the boyfriend’s family – especially the grandmother – you need to be extra cautious. You should look demure, sweet and rather conservative. This, Rachel does in a feminine pink dress with ruffles and a floral pattern.

Rachel’s blue ruffled ballgown.

Rachel attends a swanky wedding in a stunning ruffled organza gown. This Nairobi blue shade reminds us of Cinderella, and of Lupita Nyong’o’s Oscar moment in 2014. Rachel is coming into her own in this scene, where she has to handle her boyfriend’s less-than-supportive mother. The colour of her gown speaks of clarity and calm.
